Miles from nowhere

At around 11:00am on Saturday March 13th I got a call from my friend Gennaidy.  A few weeks prior to this, I had written him an email with some questions about a group of Ukrainian performance artists who go by the name Taburet. Apparently, sometime in 2008, the group acquired a small parcel of rural land approximately 250km outside Kyiv near a town called Oberok.

Taburet’s little hamlet consists of seven simple concrete buildings (each heated by a wood burning stove), a few outhouses, and a central well for fetching fresh water.  Over the past year and a half, the group has managed to create for themselves an isolated albeit thriving artistic community in a place many would consider to be the middle of nowhere.
